Unlike Damien, I adopted (was adopted by?)
Reagen when he was almost one year old. Because he is so close in
age to Dami, I have given him the same birthday! They should
share something without fighting over it! Reagen is 13" tall
and weighs in at 15lbs. He is getting a little chubby and we are
working on that. When I acquired Rea, he was a mess! He had been
attacked by another dog and his eyes were cut, infected and
swollen shut! He still has a cloudy spot on one eye, but his vet
says that it will not affect his vision.
Shortly after bringing Rea home (3 days), he introduced Dami into a life of crime and drugs! They decided to sample a bottle of Motrin! Well after much anxiety, and a few paychecks too, I am happy to report that they have no permanent damage from that little adventure. Then, two weeks later, Rea's muzzle swelled up and I thought he had been stung by a bee. No such easy way out, he had ringworm. After spraying my whole house with rubbing alcohol, I am also happy to report that Dami and myself have stayed ringworm free. Then (are you starting to realize that he should have been named Trouble or Paycheck or The-Vet's-Daughter-Needs-College-Money?) he developed a very sensitive stomach from his ringworm medicine, resulting in another day at the vet. When Dami went home to meet Grandpa and Grandma, Rea stayed with his buddy Jim. Rea explored Jim's bedroom and figured out how to open a cabinet that had dog treats and a chocolate bar hidden inside. He discovered that he loves chocolate, resulting in another trip to the emergency clinic! The emergency clinic is also using Rea as a test study since they discovered that activated charcoal gives him seizures. This was discovered after yet another episode of eating bad things. He decided to check out an ant trap and ended up spending another night (and another of mom's paychecks) at the emergency clinic. Rea is the troublemaker of the family, I'm hoping this is just his troublesome teenage years!
While Rea has the same coloring as Dami, he looks very different. Dami is big boned and large (18 lbs) while Rea is very delicate and almost feminine looking at 15 lbs (8 - 10 lbs is the breed standard). Also, Rea has a Chihuahua type face. People always call him the "Taco Bell" dog!
Rea is very polite. If he wants in your lap,
he will sit in front of you and just stare until you
invite him up. Of
course, if you just ignore him, he will just continue to sit and
stare until you can't stand it anymore! Rea has learned how to
"speak" and "sit pretty" for treats. Although
a grump in nature towards other dogs, he loves people and their
laps! He also loves the camera and is a total ham
when you bring it out. I guess he's just a naturally born model
and like any model, he needs to watch his weight. This is one dog
that can have one small treat and end up with tail rolls from it!
For this reason, poor Rea is always on a diet and tries to
convince everyone he is starved and abused!
Rea does not like any dogs except for his own. For this reason, we attended "growl" class. A class for aggression, this taught me how to work with Rea and what to watch for. It also taught Rea that his anti-social behavior was not acceptable. As you can see, he kept this class of big dogs in line! They all had to sit on the hard ground while he got to be "King Pup" in mom's arms! (Hint, he's the small one in the middle :-)

However, while Dami would like to play 24/7, Rea would just like to sleep in the nearest lap or burrow into the closest blanket. He gets really mad at Dami when Dami insists on playing. UPDATE! REA HAS LEARNED THE JOY OF DOG PLAY! Although Rea still appreciates a really good nap, he has also learned that tug of war and mock fighting with Dami is fun too!
Rea's Love Life: Reagen has a cyber girlfriend named Annie. His
friend Chico is constantly
trying
to battle Rea for Annie's affection. Of course, everyone knows
that Chico is just wasting his time there! Why would Annie want a
pup like Chico when she can have a studmuffin like Rea? In fact,
Annie's wearing the gift Rea sent her for her birthday in this
picture. Don't see Chico's gift anywhere, do you? :-) You can
click on Annie's picture to go to her home page. Reagen met both
Annie and Chico on MinPinTalk, an email list from Onelist where
they have lots of fun! UPDATE! Chico is now out of the picture and
Rea has Annie all to himself!
Christmas Trip Update 1998-
Reagen went
to Michigan for the week of Christmas and met his Grandma,
Grandpa, and Aunt for the first time. When we got there, it was -27
degrees with wind chill factor. Needless to say, Rea did not
understand why he had to go outside to potty when it was so cold.
It's a really good thing he got his Grandma a hand held carpet
cleaner for Christmas! On Christmas Eve morning, he discovered a
way out of the yard and went playing in the middle of a major
street. He thought it was lots of fun to play dodge'em cars with
mom chasing him crying and yelling. Fortunately, I caught him
before he got hit. Then, Christmas morning, again out in the yard
(on leash this time), Rea fought and lost the "war of the
roses"! Somehow, he ripped open his ear on one of my mom's
rose bushes. After over an hour of trying to get it to stop
bleeding, we had to take him to the emergency clinic for stitches.
Rea was not happy to have his head all wrapped up cause he looked
very funny and everyone laughed at him. Inspite of all Rea's
mishaps, it was a fun trip and my parents loved him. They spoiled
him rotten and invited him back anytime he wants to come
visit.
